Mitochondria-Targeted Vitamin E Antioxidant: An Agent for Cardiovas- cular Protection
نویسندگان
چکیده
Mitochondria play an important role in controlling the bioenergetic status of cells in physiological conditions. Consequently, mitochondrial dysfunction leads to a range of human vascular diseases in humans. Although the molecular mechanisms responsible for mitochondria-mediated disease processes are not altogether clear, oxidative stress appears to be closely linked to the subsequent increase in the amount of free radicals. Accordingly, strategies for the targeted delivery of antioxidants to mitochondria are being developed. In this review, we shall briefly discuss the metabolism of cellular reactive oxygen species and its role in pathophysiology, currently available antioxidants and possible reasons for their ineffectiveness in ameliorating oxidative stress-mediated diseases, and recent developments in mitochondria-targeted antioxidants (in particular mitochondria-targeted vitamin E) and their potential for the treatment of cardiovascular disease.

Antioxidant effect of different vitamins on methemoglobin production: An in vitro study
Nitrite intoxication occurs frequently in ruminants and equines. The most common treatment of this disorder is administration of 1% methylene blue, although the use of some antioxidant agents e.g. vitamins and complementary treatment may also be useful. The aim of this study was to evaluate the in vitro antioxidative effects of some vitamins on methemoglobinemia induced by sodium nitrite. For t...
متن کاملMitochondrial Toxicity of Depleted Uranium: Protection by Beta-Glucan
Considerable evidence suggests that mitochondrial dysfunction contributes to the toxicity of uranyl acetate (UA), a soluble salt of depleted uranium (DU). We examined the ability of the two antioxidants, beta-glucan and butylated hydroxyl toluene (BHT), to prevent UA-induced mitochondrial dysfunction using rat-isolated kidney mitochondria. Beta-glucan (150 nM) and BHT (20 nM) attenuated UA-indu...

متن کاملStrategy to reduce free radical species in Alzheimer's disease: an update of selected antioxidants.
Alzheimer's disease (AD), characterized by progressive loss of memory, language, reasoning and other cognitive functions, including dementia, is characterized pathologically by the presence of senile plaques, neurofibrillary tangles and synapse loss. Increased oxidative/nitrosative stress, decreased antioxidants, mitochondrial damage and other factors play major roles in the development and pro...
متن کاملVitamin E protection against gentamicin-induced nephrotoxicity in rats: a biochemical and histopathologic study
The specificity of gentamicin for vitamin E deficiency-associated oxidative stresses in the renal proximal convoluted tubules is apparently related to its ability to increasingly facilitate generation of radical species in mitochondria. To determine the ways in which vitamin E manage the currently processes, we conducted a prospective study aimed to investigate the tubular preserving effect of ...
